After receiving
her Master's Degree in Education from Johns Hopkins University
in Baltimore, Elaine Mikk worked her way up through the Montgomery
School System and was enrolled in the "Principal Trainee
Program" in Montgomery County, Maryland. Normally, reaching
one's goal would be enough, but not for Elaine. Something was
missing! That something turned out to be her desire to own her
own business. A vacation to visit her brother, who was operating
a kitchen remodeling firm in Massachusetts, led Elaine into the
Kitchen Industry. With her husband John and their three children,
they started selling cabinetry part-time from their Olney, Md.,
home. Word soon spread and in August of 1983, the first Cabinet
Discounters, Inc., store was opened in Gaithersburg, Md. In 1984,
Elaine left the school system and focused her full attention to
growing the business. And, grow the business she did!
Currently, there are six Cabinet Discounters, Inc.,
locations in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area and tens of
thousands of happy customers. In addition, they own and operate
two manufacturing facilities for stone and solid surface countertops
and also for cabinetry. Her success in business has earned Elaine
great respect in the Kitchen & Bath Industry. She has been
invited to serve on numerous Advisory Councils of large cabinetry
and flooring manufacturers. Her extensive travels have afforded
the opportunity to meet and befriend many leaders in the building
and remodeling industry. This vast network of contact and Elaine's
educational background gave rise to the Home Innovations Radio
Show which first began broadcasting in 1996. In 1998 the show
moved to 630WMAL Radio, the ABC owned station in Washington, DC,
where the show can be heard each Sunday at 11 AM.
