The Fisher House program is a unique private-public partnership that supports America's military in their time of need. The program recognizes the special sacrifices of our men and women in uniform and the hardships of military service by meeting a humanitarian need beyond that which is normally provided by the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs.

Because members of the military and their families are stationed worldwide and must often travel great distances for specialized medical care, Fisher House Foundation donates "comfort homes," built on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers. These homes enable family members to be close to a loved one at the most stressful times - during the hospitalization for an unexpected illnes, disease, or injury. There is at least one Fisher House at every major military medical center to assist families in need and to ensure that they are provided with the comforts of home in a supportive environment. The Fisher House program served more than 8,500 families in 2004.

This is one of three houses located at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, DC. All of the bedrooms were occupied, so we were unable to photograph them. In addition to the usual furnishings, a sophisticated message system allows residents to keep in touch.

The Kitchen - fully stocked with food. Families and physical therapy patients can eat what and when they like. It also gives patients the opportunity to adjust to routine life around the house before going home.

Mabel - a lot more than a housekeeper! Mabel provides a sympathetic ear and helps with babysitting and whatever else the residents may need.
In addition to the kitchen there is a dining room, a stockroom for supplies and a utility room with freezers, washers and dryers. Residents must clean up after themselves. This gives the patients another opportunity to adjust to routine household life.
