One of the most common problems with remodeling projects that can cause delays and aggravation is the lack of coordination of the various craftsmen. Things must be coordinated and done in order. After tear-out is the easiest time to make any plumbing or electrical changes. Wall work should be done next, followed by cabinetry, countertops, plumbing and electrical hookups, and painting or wallpapering. You can avoid disruption and delays by using three simple steps. First, have a plan. Talk to all of your contractors to find out exactly at what stage of construction they need to be involved. Work up a tentative schedule and clear it with each contractor. Second, make sure that all craftsmen are given a copy of your plan and that they communicate with each other to avoid any surprises. Finally, allow a reasonable amount of time to complete the job.
